Ningura Napurrula, born around 1938 near Watulka, began painting after contributing to her husband Yala Yala Gibbs Tjungurrayi’s works and participating in the 1996 Kintore Women's Painting Project. She held her first solo exhibition in 2000 and was selected as the only female desert artist to paint the ceiling of Paris’s Musee du quai Branly. Ningura’s dynamic paintings, known for strong linear designs and thick acrylic layers, are held in major galleries worldwide. Her art often focuses on women’s ceremonial practices and ancestral stories, and she is recognised as a leading and influential figure in contemporary Indigenous Australian art.
