Description

Ningura Napurrula was born at Watulka, south of the Kiwirrkura Community, around 1938 and died in 2013.

Ningura's artistic journey began in earnest during the mid-1990s, when she joined the Papunya Tula Artists, a cooperative renowned for its contribution to contemporary Aboriginal art. Her unique style, characterized by intricate patterns and symbolic representations of her ancestral stories, quickly gained recognition. Inspired by the sacred stories and Dreamings of her Pintupi heritage, Ningura's work reflects a profound connection to the land and culture that shaped her identity.

In 2000, Ningura participated in a collaborative painting, “Kintore Women’s Painting”, by senior Pintupi women, which was included in the ‘Papunya Tula: Genesis and Genius’ exhibition at the Art Gallery of NSW, Sydney.

In 2004, Ningura Napurrula's work reached new heights when elements of her painting were incorporated into the architecture of the Musée du Quai Branly in Paris, adorning its ceilings and walls. This achievement not only highlighted her extraordinary talent but also underscored the global appreciation of Indigenous Australian art. Her designs, rich with cultural symbolism, added depth and meaning to the museum, creating a bridge between her Pintupi heritage and audiences around the world.

Ningura has exhibited extensively within Australia, in Prague, Toskansky Place, Prague, Czech Republic (2003); and Masterpieces from the Western Desert, Gavin Graham Gallery, London, United Kingdom (2003).

She was one of the most respected and influential female artists from the Western Desert region. Her memory will live on in the magnificent artworks that she created that now hang around the world
