As a child, Kathleen travelled around her country with her parents, siblings and extended family according to the seasonal availability of food and water. In doing so she developed a deep understanding and knowledge of the land, both physically and spatially.
My Country – Bush Seeds depicts the sandhills, spinifex, water holes, bush seeds and bush flowers of Kathleen’s traditional country, Atnangkere and details the land traversed by Arnkerrthe during the course of her epic Dreamtime journey.
Whilst layers of variously coloured dots cover sacred sites they also represent the bush seeds as they come into flower before being collected and ground for food and bush medicine.
Through careful placement of dots grouped to form different patterns and shapes, Kathleen expresses the natural beauty and seasonal cycles of her country.
