Ena Nakamarra Gibson passed away in January 2011. Her home was the Aboriginal Community of Nyirripi, in Australia's Northern Territory, 460 km northwest of Alice Springs.
Between 2006 and 2011, working with Warlukurlangu Artists Aboriginal Corporation in Yuendumi, Ena painted her father's Jukurrpa stories. These Dreamings related directly to her land, its natural features, flora and fauna, and were passed down through the generations for millennia, to her grandfather and father.
Ena generally painted Ngapa Jukurrpa (Water Dreaming), stories about sacred sites, animals and plants commonly found in the country surrounding this community. The men and women of the Nakamarra/Napurrula and Jakamarra/Jupurrurla subsection are the custodians of Ngapa Jukurrpa.
Food and bush tucker are still regularly hunted and collected today, and Ena would often go out with family and friends to hunt for goanna, kangaroo, snake, and witchetty grubs as well as bush tucker such as native currants, bush potato and bush banana.
Biography Courtesy of Warlukurlangu Artists Aboriginal Corporation
The country associated with this Jukurpa is Kiwirrkura, west of Kingtore, in Western Australia. The Dreaming travelled as clouds, lightening and thunder from Kiiwirrkurra, north to Warlarla (Rabbit Flat) and beyond to Purtalypa (Christmas Creek).
The circles in the work show the water holes made by this dreaming and the lines are represnting sandhills near Kiwirrkura.
