Emily Pwerle - link to a rapidly diminishing culture

We celebrate an Utopia artist who created a limited number of amazing works of art in a short period of time and in our view the most significant and beautiful piece by this elderly Aboriginal artist who never experienced living in our modern world is on offer now.

 Cat.No. 3630, Linen, acrylic, 180 x 360cm

Emily Pwerle was born c 1922 and shares the same country and languages with her sisters Galya, Molly and Minnie Pwerle. She also shares the same dreamings. As was the case with her sisters she started painting at workshops arranged by her niece, Barbara Weir, in 2004

Emily, along with her sisters Galya and Molly, could not have had better teachers (Barbara, an international star and Minnie who was widely collected in Australia and overseas).

When Emily painted “Awelye Atnwengerrp (women’s ceremony), she employed a series of lines and symbols and often criss-crossed patterns. These are frequently laid one on top of another in colours that are expressive, colourful and dynamic. Her patterns originate in body design and were an integral part of ceremonies.

The nature of Emily’s paintings encapsulates the way of life of her family. She turned 100 already and can recall and produce notions of those early days and nights where ceremony was such an integral part of her life.  This contact with a stone-age culture is rapidly diminishing but may still be made through the work of Emily and her sisters.

The artwork on offer was painted by Emily at her home in Utopia, about 250 km north/east of Alice Springs with materials being supplied to her by her niece the artist Barbara Weir. Werner, owner of Boomerang Art, supplied Art material to Emily Pwerle as well and bought this painting from her via her niece Barbara Weir.

This artwork is in our view the most significant painting done by Emily Pwerle and we were lucky that it was sold to us to be included into our 30 year collection.
