Karen Bird, the artist, was born in 1984 and is the daughter of well known Utopia artist Lindsay Bird. She belongs to the Anmatyerre Language Group in Mulga Bore, Utopia, some 250 km north/east of Alice Springs in Central Australia. Karen was told the stories she paints by Senior women in her family. Those relate to songs and dances associated with traditional ceremonies.
This painting is about the Alpar Seed Story. In times past, women would collect the seed of the Rat-tail plant, crush it and use it in making bread.
