Lorna Fencer Napurrula was born in the 1920s in the Tanami Desert, situated in Central Australia. She became a pioneering figure within her community of Lajamanu, where she was among the first Aboriginal artists to adopt painting with acrylic on canvas and linen.

As a prominent elder, Lorna Fencer Napurrula played a significant role in maintaining and strengthening her cultural identity. She achieved this not only through her vibrant paintings but also by participating in and leading ceremonies, ensuring the transmission of cultural knowledge and practices.

Lorna Fencer Napurrula passed away in 2006, yet her artistic legacy continues to inspire future generations. Her work has been recognised for its lasting impact; in 2007, she was honoured as one of Australia’s 50 most collectible artists by the Australian Art Collector Magazine.
